Description: This listing is more for informational purposes than anything. We cannot easily ship these fragile aluminum strips and often they break when you try to remove them as electrolysis has usually occurred to some degree. Couple this with the fact that they had a rivet hole drilled every 4" on center and that makes for a very weak part. If you show up in person we will be glad to loan you the tools, no extra charge if you break a couple while removing them... These retainers were used in early 1967 Cougars with a vinyl top, the Lincoln Mercury Master Parts Catalog: (1) Illustration section 500; Page 20; (2) body parts section -- 53728-9 states they were only in use prior to 4/3/67 and the part number is C5AZ-6353729-A. They are cut in lengths of about 67" long, measure 1/4" wide and about a 1/16" thick. The tapered holes are located every 4" on center. After 4/3/67 and throughout the 1968 model year a stainless strip was used and no sealant was applied.
Here is a picture of an early 67 with some of the sealant removed to expose the aluminum strip encapsulated in the drip rail gutter. Black sealant was used on Cougars equipped with a black top and white sealant was used with white vinyl top Cougars. The first couple of rivets were installed from the top side on the "A" pillar and the rest were installed from the bottom side. The rivets are spaced 4" on center.
This picture shows the rivets from the bottom side.
The stainless steel trim between the roofside weatherstrip channel and drip rail shown here on the "C" pillar hides the rivets
After you drill all the rivets out you will have to very carfully pry the trim out of the gutter inch by inch.
With the door open and the rear window rolled down, use a wood block and hammer to remove the drip rail moulding.
