Our experience this year as a seller was very good. I would even say excellent! The weather was the worst any of the locals could ever remember with 60 mile an hour wind gusts, tornado warnings and closed roads throughout the region. To make matters worse, many of the mountain passes had several feet of snow and many people were turned around because of road closures. If you were a seller that faced stiff competition in the form of similar cars, the prices were lack luster to say the least. It was great for those who were looking for a bargain on an early Camaro or other common makes as attendance was down. We felt having a unique car (a 69 xr7 CJ convertible has never been offered at BJ before) really helped the enthusiasm level when it was our turn to cross the stage. I was impressed that when it was our turn to drive up the ramp, a BJ rep came and asked "What do we need to get you for the car?" I said "I need $70k and would like $80K". Next, the Speed Channel announcer came over and asked me to point out some areas of interest that I would like the 80 million viewers to know about. He did a great job presenting the car but I wish they would of pointed out more of the flaws, it almost made it look like we were selling a pristine show car at a bargain price when in actuality it was really just a driver that had EXTREMELY tired paint. The hammer price was $72,000.00 so after the buyer pays the 10% buyers fee the final price was $79,200.00. To read more observations from myself and those in attendance click here.
Summary: One of the best un-restored 428 CJ Cougar convertibles. Matching numbers with less than 79,000 original miles. Verified by 428 CJ Registrar Scott Taylor, Marti Report and Factory Invoice. Arguably one of the most desirable Mercury Cougars ever made.
Details: The ultimate in luxury muscle cars. First year of the Cougar convertible. A mere 96 428 Cobra Jet, Ram Air, XR7 convertible Cougars were built in 1969 in this configuration. This convertible has always been properly stored and comes with its original smog system in great condition and factory installed, cold air conditioning. The original carpet, trim, Rim Blow steering wheel, dash, trunk mat and other detail items that are often replaced with reproduction parts are still in place. The car has had one repaint in 1979 and is due for another but looks more than presentable for a street driven muscle car as it sits. All of the original Ram Air components are in place as is the VIN stamped block, heads and transmission. The axle has been upgraded to a 3.25 Traction-Lok but nothing else has been modified or "Hot Rodded". This convertible was ordered with all the "right" options that collectors look for in an investment quality classic. Keep in mind, this is not a pieced together project that has risen from the ashes. The glass, including the windshield, are original date coded Carlite. Peek under the dash and you will see every wire and clip is in its original undisturbed place. The power top and windows glide up and down with ease, tilt-away works great and the motor has been rebuilt to stock configurations with hardened valve seats. The "cat" has definitely held its own in recent years due to a very loyal following and extremely low production numbers. This is a car you can take on a long trip and not feel exhausted when you get there or worried about every little bug that hits your grille. Classics are meant to be driven.
