Description:
In stock and ready for immediate shipment! Finding correct radio knobs for a 1968 Ford Mustang or Mercury Cougar equipped with a center console has been a huge obstacle for decades now. To clear the padded radio bezel cover, one must have these elusive, one year only, deep well knobs. Look close at the detail, these are the most spot-on reproduction Ford radio knobs ever made. These will also work on your 68 without a console as well as your 1967 Mustang or Cougar with or without console and although they would not be letter correct for anything but a 68 with a console, they do not look out of place. Note that this four piece knob set does not come with the white plastic spacer located behind the right hand inner knob. This spacer is needed on "some" applications and we do have them available here. This set of knobs will work with any of our Custom Auto Sound systems we sell but to fit the larger shafts on these modern units you must first remove the spring steel inserts. We have VERY attractive dealer pricing on these knobs and dozens of other parts that cannot be obtained elsewhere. Look for more Mustang / Cougar reproductions of this quality level to come from West Coast Classic Cougar in the near future.
Trivia! Of the 113,741 Cougars produced in 1968 59,835 of them came factory equipped with a center console. Of the 317,423 Mustangs produced in 1968 62,444 of them came with consoles. That means about 122,279 of these sets of knobs were originally put on the street. We say "about" because we have no idea how many consoles were sold as a dealer add on and of course, the XR7G and Shelby had consoles that tucked under the dash and used the standard chrome radio bezel that did not require these longer knob sets. These stats were taken from Kevin Marti's books "Cougar By The Numbers" and "Mustang By The Numbers".
The inner knob that is shaped like a funnel measures 1 3/8" tall and the outer T shaped knob is 1 1/2" tall.
Original knobs will more often than not show hairline cracks where the knobs mate to the shafts. These cracks are caused be over-turning and the problem is exacerbated by the fact that time and excessive heat make them brittle. Our knobs are made from modern materials that will not crack as easily as the originals. Just like the OEM knobs, these have the spring steel inserts embedded in all four knobs.
Lightly scratched sets (when available) often trade hands in the $140-$175 range. Those days are soon to be over!
The inner knob on your original knob will have a C8ZA-8A932-B engineering number imprinted on the backside and the outer knob will have a C8ZA-18817 Number visible on the back.
Keep in mind we will accept your incomplete set of 1967 Cougar console radio knobs in trade for a set of these reproduction knobs. Give us a ring for details!
If you have an AM radio with no rear speaker then you will need to purchase the white plastic fader / balance delete spacer pictured in the middle as shown below.
