The Most Accurate Autolite Alternator Restoration to Date.

We are proud to offer concours detailed and restored 1967, 1968, and early 1969 alternators with a 2 year warranty. These alternators are assembled from correct original parts. Did you know that in May/June 1968 the rear case changed to include the word “Autolite”? Our restorer only rebuilds alternators for Ford enthusiasts. All are rebuilt to have an output of between 55 and 61 amperes. This is a good thing and will not be a problem to those cars that originally had 38 amp alternators.

The stator part of the alternators is will look like an NOS part and will have a recreated date codes and period correct markings. The stator is the windings and is partially visible as a dark band between the front housing and rear case. Currently only common select ink stamped alternators from 1966 to March 1969 will be available. Plans to include the die stamped April 1969-1971 alternators are in the works. The ink stamped “Autolite” logo and information has been painstakingly recreated from NOS examples, and is stamped with correct colored ink. 38 amp alternators were stamped with purple ink, 42 amp alternators were stamped with orange ink, and the 55 amp alternators were stamped in red ink. These are honestly the best recreated ink markings to date. Previous examples used an incorrect style of type set which was only close to the 1960's original font. These stampings are of the highest quality as shown in the photographs.

We have been unable to unearth a recipe or determine what criteria was used for each of the available part numbers on our alternators. It has kind of been lost, even to the experts. Our research has discovered information that 38, 42, and 55 amp alternators were all used on 1967 Mercury Cougar and Ford Mustangs with the 289 V-8 engine and with both a single or double groove fan belt pulley. Similar findings have been found for the other years and V-8 engines. Things like standard or heavy duty cooling, power steering, and air conditioning increased the amp ratings and necessitated the use of a double pulley. The double sheave pulley seems to have been used with the higher amp alternators when power steering was not included. Some clues and observations: Power steering used a single groove pulley. Air conditioning normally used either a 42 or 55 amp alternator. 42 and 55 amp alternators often would have a double sheave pulley if power steering was omitted 38 amp alternators were used with the absence of power steering and air conditioning. A 4 blade radiator fan or 20 inch radiator is an indication of standard cooling. 1968-1969 390 and 428CJ engines should have come with 42 or 55 amp alternators. Thermactor smog systems usually bumped up the amp ratings too Evidence that manual transmissions also triggered a larger amp alternator. Sometimes this would be in conjunction with the smog systems, especially in 1968.

Core charges apply, we will require correct rear cases and front housing for full core values. Examples shown here:

Show examples of correct teardrop rear cases with and without 'Autolite' logo, and front housing with die stamps.

These will normally have D0SE... markings or something similar.

Restored alternators are shipped from our outside shop without fans or pulleys. We have reproduction fans, pulleys, and new hardware for installation, available from our catalog. The fan and double sheave pulley require a special deep 15/16” socket tool with provision for inserting an 5/16” Allen hex wrench and torquing 60-100 ft.lbs.

We will ask you to specify whether or not that your car has the thermactor smog pump or if you are using the low mount alternator brackets. This information is needed so that the rear case of the alternator is indexed correctly so that the wiring harness can mount away from the engine.

We also need to know your cars date for including the correct date stamp on these alternators. This can be found either on your Marti Report, or on your door data plate tag. If the date is unknown, we can very closely determine your original date, if you submit your VIN number. Mercury Cougars only please, we have access to a registry which can very accurately pinpoint your date regardless if your Cougar was built in Dearborn or San Jose. Actual alternator manufacturing assembly dates are known by the builder, and will be accurately selected based on your cars build date.

THIS IS A RESTORATION SERVICE.  This requires that you send your core to us, and we will send it out to be restored and then return it to you.  If you do not have a core, please contact us as we can sometimes come up with cores, but they are hard to come by and we can not guarantee we can acquire them.
