There are very few Classic Cougars running around with their complete factory exhausts. Individual NOS components would run in the $1000's of dollars for a complete system, if the parts were available.
Our intentions are to offer these replacement brackets and clamps for those that need replacements or for those folks wanting to make an original looking clone exhaust system. Majority of the 1968-1972 'Turbo' type mufflers had physical box dimensions of 19" x 10-1/2" x 4".
The inlet and outlet exhaust pipe outside diameter was 2 inch in and 2 inch out for 1967-1968 Cougars with most all engines. Most 1969-1972 were all 2-1/4 inch inlets and 2-1/4 inch outlets. The isolator part of all of the hanger assemblies was made from recycled tire sidewalls. Restoring the isolator brackets with "fresh retreads" is often a good idea. We are looking into metal tabs that can be tack welded onto the rear of replacement mufflers so that you can make a very realistic looking factory exhaust system. When selecting clamps, be sure of your size exhaust pipes or intended pipes. We offer factory used clamps in both 2 inch and 2-1/4 inch. Two different styles of clamps too the band style 1967-1970 and the yoke style 1971-1973. We apologize for not having all of the 1973 Cougar exhaust information, but we have not been able to find any definitive information regarding the 1973's. Anyone out there have any insight that they would like to share?
Updated, we found an unmolested Q code 1973 XR7 convertible with 'quiet dual' exhaust in the wilds. Uses complete 1972 muffler and exhaust system. H-pipe, Mufflers, Hangers, - Everything!
Single exhaust and 'sporty duals' still unconfirmed.
Cougar aficionado Steve submits that his 1973 Mercury 351-2V Cougar came with a single muffler with an imprinted part number of D3WA-5230-AA.
