1967 - 1970 Mercury Cougar / Ford Mustang Anti Backfire Valves - Thermactor

Mercury Cougars had Thermactor smog systems from their inception in 1967, but only those cars destined for California, District Sales Office (DSO) numbers 52 and 53 on your door data plate. The Thermactor emissions system injects air into the exhaust manifolds, which when mixed with the hot exhaust gases further promotes the burning of the hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. Also called 'Backfire Suppressor Valve'.
Starting in 1968 the Thermactor smog system was used on nearly all gasoline engines equipped with manual transmissions across all of the Ford car lines in all 50 states.
*Note excludes Canada, which received the Ford IMCO systems. Additionally the Thermactor system was used on high performance engines with factory installed Holley carburetors, regardless of transmissions. Which include 390GT engines, 428 Cobra Jets engines, 427-4V GT-E’s, and Boss 302 Eliminators.
In most cases the thermactor smog parts that West Coast Classic Cougars sells will be used and we cannot guarantee that after 40 years certain parts such as the anti-backfire valves and canisters, check valves or air pumps will still function like new. We are not even sure that some of these parts lasted until the oil embargo in 1974. We estimate that the majority of those show cars seen with vintage factory smog systems are ‘just for show’, but they sure do greatly increase the value of our cars when sold at auction.
