Description:
The Cougar 4 speed manual transmission, is indicated by either a “5” or “6” on the door data plate, under transmission. Code “5” a wide ratio transmission, and “6” a close ratio transmission were used across all years 1967 – 1973. This ‘Top Loader’ is a Ford built transmission and is revered as the “strongest most reliable transmission ever built”. The Top Loader name comes from the plate on top where the gear assembly is ‘top loaded’. The 3 speed 3.03 is also a ‘top loader’.
At West Coast Classic Cougars the transmissions that we sell are “Used”, meaning that they are ‘takeoffs’ from the many 1967 – 1973 Cougars that we have purchased and scrapped for the purpose of organ donations to breath life into those Classic Cougars that deserve a second chance at life. Our takeoff or takeout transmissions are generally from long parked Cougars that have sat neglected for several years or more. A transmission is described as an undamaged case, tailshaft, with all internals. It will not include the following – shifter, shifter mounting plate, shift rods, backup switch or wiring, bellhousing, clutch or pressure plate, mount or crossmember, or yoke. It will be a used bare transmission like you might find at a swapmeet.

1968 289 / 302 Manual 4 Speed Transmission – Used

RUG-AZ or RUG-AZ1 Original equipment 4 speed top loader transmission from a 1970 Mercury Cougar with engine code Q 428 Cobra Jet. Additionally 1971 Mercury Cougar with engine code J 429 Cobra Jet and engine code C 429 Cobra Jet. Transmission code 6 on the door tag, this would be a close ratio 4 speed transmission with a 2.32 ratio first gear. Ford master part number D0ZZ-7003-H. The tailshaft on this transmission has a different bolt pattern for the Hurst shifter plate.

*Note – Technically speaking the 1971 429CJ would use casting number RUG-AZ1.

1972 351 Manual 4 Speed Transmission – Used
RUG-BJ Original equipment 4 speed top loader transmission from a 1972 Mercury Cougar with engine code Q - 351-4V only. This is an early transmission and was used from the inception of the 1972 model year through 12-1-1971. Transmission code 5 on the door tag, this would be a wide ratio 4 speed transmission with a 2.78 ratio first gear. Ford master part number D2ZZ-7003-D.

1972 – 1973 351 Manual 4 Speed Transmission – Used
RUG-BJ1 Original equipment 4 speed top loader transmission from a 1972 or 1973 Mercury Cougar with engine code Q - 351-4V only. This is a late transmission and was used starting 12-1-1971. Transmission code 5 on the door tag, this would be a wide ratio 4 speed transmission with a 2.78 ratio first gear. Ford master part number D2ZZ-7003-H.
