Starting with the model year 1970, Ford moved the ignition key to the steering column and implemented a locking steering wheel and locking transmission shifter for anti-theft reasons. This “Reverse Lockout Rod” connects to the bottom of your steering column and locks your transmission shifter in reverse.

Rod used for locking the 3 speed manual transmission in “Reverse”. Connects to the lower tab of the steering column and the reverse control transmission lever shift arm. Prevents the transmission from shifting out of reverse when the ignition key is removed. Rod is about 13-1/2 inches long.

The 3 speed manual transmission, could be ordered on any 1970 Cougar with any 351 engine. Transmission code “1” on your door data tag. Ford part number D0ZZ-7E330-B.

Rod used for locking the 3 speed manual transmission in “Reverse”. Connects to the lower tab of the steering column and the reverse control transmission lever shift arm. Prevents the transmission from shifting out of reverse when the ignition key is removed. Rod is about 12 inches long and was originally marked with a purple paint mark.

The 3 speed manual transmission, could be ordered only on “H” code 351-2V engines in 1971 and 1972. Transmission code “1” on your door data tag.

*Trivia – 1972 was the last year that the 3 speed manual transmission could be factory ordered on a Cougar.

Rod used for locking the 4 speed manual transmission in “Reverse”. Connects to the lower tab of the steering column and the reverse control transmission lever shift arm. Prevents the transmission from shifting out of reverse when the ignition key is removed. Rod is about 11 inches long and was originally marked with a green paint mark.

The 4 speed manual transmission, could not be ordered on the 351-2V engines. Only 351-4V’s and 429CJ’s in 1971, and 351CJ’s (Q code) in both 1972 and 1973. Transmission code “5” or 6”” on your door data tag.

*Trivia – 1971 was the last year for the chromed Hurst flat bar shift lever. 1972 – 1973 used a round chromed Hurst shift lever.
